Oriental / Occidental

Oriental means to rise before the Sun, occidental means to rise after the Sun. The qualities, significations and humoral qualities of the planets can change considerably according to whether they are oriental or occidental. For example, most planets gain in height and hair when oriental.

In addition a planet can be 'oriental in the figure', meaning that it is located near the ascendant which is the eastern angle, or 'occidental in the figure', meaning that is is located near the descendant which is the western angle. The Sun is more suited to the oriental angle and the Moon is more suited to the occidental angle.

In signification of physical appearance most planets gain in height and hair when oriental. The humoral qualities of the planets are also moderated according to whether they are oriental or occidental as follows:

Saturn oriental – cold and dry
Saturn occidental – only dry

Jupiter oriental – hot and moist
Jupiter occidental – only moist

Mars oriental – hot and dry
Mars occidental – only dry

Venus oriental – hot and moist
Venus occidental – only moist

Mercury oriental – hot
Mercury occidental - dry
