A Time to Ask: a one-day workshop on horary astrology
Astrological tradition expects that the question put to a horary astrologer should not only trouble the mind, it should also stir the spirit and originate from the soul. Under these circumstances horary offers a very powerful astrological tool, not only for revealing the outcome or solution to a problem, but also for demonstrating its origin and cause, and what route should be taken to avoid repetition and ensure a full resolution.
This one day workshop will introduce and illuminate the most pertinent techniques of horary through practical demonstrations of modern client charts covering a variety of typical horary themes. From the heart-breaking to the hilarious, and from the obviously emotional to the apparently mundane, the examples show why horary is a necessary tool for every modern astrologer, being simple enough to be of immediate practical value, yet powerful enough to change the lives of those who are trapped in cycles of despair.

Conference presentations

Fri, 10th April, 9:30 am (75 minutes):
Cosmic Connections: Understanding Timing in Horary and Elections
A reliable assessment of timing is usually considered an advanced element of horary, but this presentation will show how the symbolism of time reveals itself naturally once the principles are understood and the most practical techniques identified. Modern and historical case-studies will demonstrate how connections between nativities, moments of enquiry, and their ultimate resolution are often quite stunning. Exploring the issues allows us to identify the best method for predicting when moments of significance occur, as well as refining our practice of electional techniques and deepening our broader understanding of how astrological cycles unfold their meaning over time.

Sat, 11th April, 9:30am-11:45am (double lecture with Demetra George)
The Timing of Illness
Hellenistic astrologers looked to the motion of the Moon its speed, light, and aspects at the time a person took to bed ill as the key to understanding the cause, treatment, course, and prognosis of the malady. These guidelines can also be used to analyze surgery charts. Later astrologers merged this method with Galens work on Critical Days, which then developed into the doctrine of decumbiture. In this double lecture, Demetra will present the origins and foundational concepts of the timing of illness based upon her translations of 1st century astrological-medical texts. Deborah will then demonstrate how Renaissance astrologer Nicholas Culpeper applied the decumbiture method of monitoring periods of crisis and intermission in illness, allowing him to adjust his treatment according to the patients dips and turns in strength and vitality, in preparation for the time when the medical crisis came to its height.

Sat, 11th April, 3:50pm (55 mins)
The Caliph's Dream and the Elected Chart of Baghdad
The transmission of astrological treasures (and the ideals they represented) impacted upon not only the timing but the site and design of Baghdad - a city purposefully built to act as a centre of wisdom in the Arabian world. The horoscope for Baghdad is often viewed as an astrological enigma, but with this historical understanding and the help of various Arabic texts and architectural reports, we cansee how deep the symbolic and astronomical significance was between a foundation chart and the city that emerged. This adds a new dimension to our understanding of this famous chart, and opens our eyes to the extent that astrological symbolism defined the architecture of the medieval world.

12-14 June, 2015 Weekend of horary and electional astrology
Toronto, Canada

Astrology Toronto
Organised by Astrology Toronto, Inc

Friday 12 June 2015: evening presentation - 7:00pm-9:00pm
A Change of Heart: the Power of Combustion
With Mars combust and about to enter "the heart" of the Sun, this presentation considers the principles of combustion and the meaning of combust significators in horary. Traditional aphorisms caution us to treat such charts with care, since the client is undergoing deep crisis and may be in a state of trauma. With reference to several horaries that relate to turning points in the querent's life, this talk shows how difficult and painful situations call for confidence and sensitivity in judgment, always adhering to the principle of "first do no harm". Such charts, though filled with dilemma, are often the most rewarding, in their ability to help a client navigate successfully through a period of insecurity, grief an anguish.
Although themed on horary, this talk will be of interest to all astrologers wishing to understand the deeper meaning of combustion and its pivotal role in defining the planetary phases. It is suitable for all levels of astrological experience.

Saturday 13 June 2015: one day workshop
"Engagement" in Horary: Relationships, contracts and conflicts - the dynamics of 7th-house issues in horary
Robert Louis Stevenson's definition of marriage as "a field of battle and not a bed of roses", and popular sayings such as "all's fair in love and war" seem designed to justify the contradictory nature of astrology's seventh house. How can the same area of heaven that represents our adversaries and enemies be used to simultaneously signify our most intimate, passionate, and loving relationships?
All of these themes unite in the keyword "engagement", a word that applies to armies in battle as well as committed lovers and those locked in trade-negotiations. This one day workshop explores the techniques for judgement of questions concerning intimate and politically charged relationships: clarifying the principles that determine significators and co-significators, the house rulerships of "love issues", the importance of reception, and the astrological indications of inclination, resistance, dominance, desire or disinterest. Modern examples will be referred to throughout in a highly practical survey of the approach to judgement that extracts most detail, gets straight to the focus and eliminates the clutter. The exploration will also illuminate many other points of general horary technique. The workshop is suitable for all astrologers: those that are new to horary will gain immediate access to one of astrology's most powerful techniques, and those with more experience will find that it strengthens their ability to judge charts confidently, fluently, and with greater attention to relevant detail.

Sunday 14 June 2015: one day workshop
Electional Astrology: How to Get it Right
Electional astrology is one of the oldest, the most valuable, and yet one of the most underestimated branches of astrology. Its principles, when properly understood, are easily applied and can feed back to the astrological consultant a great deal of unknown information. It is the technique that allows us to look ahead and select the ideal moment to undertake something important, but it offers even more than that, because of its fascinating ability to expose the strengths and weaknesses in our plans. This workshop identifies the most important and reliable techniques used in electional astrology, and the best way to go about structuring 'an election'. Looking first at its philosophical basis and its most important sources, it will demonstrate its usefulness through a series of client requests on themes that are most relevant to a modern practitioner (weddings, surgery, launching a new project, investments, etc.). You will be provided with a full set of notes to take away after the event, and this event is suitable for all astrologers provided they have a good knowledge of basic astrological principles.

Venue:
Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, 750 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, On M5S 2J2.

20 June, 2015 Seminar for Chicago Friends of Astrology
Chicago, USA

Chicago Friends of Astrology
Organised by Friends of Astrology, Inc.

One day seminar: Key principles of horary astrology

Horary is one of the most powerful, practical, and persuasive of astrological techniques. This one day workshop introduces and illustrates its key principles, through an exploration of client-charts covering a variety of typical horary concerns. Although suitable for astrologers who are new to horary, the workshop also benefits experienced practitioners by its focus on points that (needlessly) cause confusion. How, and in what circumstances, does reception become important; what do co-significators do, and how do we combine various indicators to reliably judge what is happening, and how and when the resolution will occur?

Horary is anything but the trivial or fatalistic branch of astrology it is often seen to be. A well-handled horary consultation can change lives, resolve painful dilemmas and bring peace of mind to clients in despair. This workshop also demonstrates the importance and sensitivities of the astrologer-client engagement, highlighting points that rarely receive attention in textbooks, though they are fundamentally important in processing a question through to a confidently delivered, meaningful and illuminating judgement.

Where is it? Who dunnit? Finding things and discovering what happened with horary
In many horary charts, the key to the successful judgment lies in discovering something fundamentally significant about an event that has already happened. This is especially the case with charts involving missing persons or pets, where we need to extract every vital clue from the chart that we possibly can and test our judgement against what is already known. From missing objects, lost pets, through to abduction and identifying the perpetrator of thefts and crime, this highly practical one-day workshop focuses on the most important and reliable techniques used in the judgement of ‘mystery’ charts. The techniques are demonstrated against proven case histories and the instruction is suitable for all levels of horary experience.

The Caliph’s Dream
This presentation explores how the transmission of ancient astrological treasures (and the ideals they represented) impacted upon, not only the timing, but also the site and design of the construction of Baghdad – a city purposefully built to act as a centre of wisdom in the Arabian world. The horoscope for Baghdad is often viewed as something of an astrological enigma, but with this historical understanding and the help of various Arabic texts and architectural reports, we begin to realise how deep the symbolic and astronomical significance was between a foundation chart and the city which emerged. This adds a whole new dimension to our understanding of this famous chart, and opens our eyes to the extent that astrological symbolism defined the architecture of the medieval world.

Connections in Time: the Horary Resolution Chart
A reliable assessment of timing is considered to be an advanced element of horary technique, but this presentation shows how the symbolism of time reveals itself very naturally once its principles are properly understood. Looking at several chart examples (historical and modern), we will see how connections between moments of enquiry and resolution can be quite stunning. Understanding the issues involved allows us to identify the best method for recognizing moments of significance, whilst affirming the value of horary and the wider astrological principle of how celestial cycles unfold meaning over time.
Lecture Duration: 75 mins (pending)

Dragons, Bears, Ploughs and Burials: the Wheel of Fortune in the Pole Stars
Dragons, Bears, Ploughs and Burials: the Wheel of Fortune in the Pole Stars Star knowledge is best understood “by the heart” so this talk takes a visually rich tour through a host of information that helps astrologers understand the way constellations have been charted and put to use astrologically. Focussing on the northern polar constellation Ursa Major, it demonstrates key principles which build depth and breadth into all constellation meanings and secure our knowledge of celestial movements. Concluding with a comparative chart study, it also demonstrates the value of including prominent fixed stars in any type of chart work and the extent to which it is useful to do this.
Lecture Duration: 75 mins

Thursday 20 March (3:30-4:30pm): free-to-public presentation at the Istanbul Mercure Hotel, Altunizade, on the topic of 'Karma, Fate and Free Will in Astrology'.

Providence, Prophecy, and the Divinational Role of Judicial Astrology
Astrology has played a role in all world cultures, and for most of its history, a fine line has preserved the legally accepted and theologically approved practice of 'natural astrology' from the harsh consequences attached to the practice of 'judicial astrology' when it "transgresses its limits" and blasphemously claims to know the Will of God. This presentation explores what astrologers have had to say about the philosophical issues at stake, and the stance they have taken towards the thorny issue of fate and free will in traditional predictive practice.
Saturday 22 March (10:30am-4:30pm): One day workshop:
The Horary Consultation

It has greater scope and flexibility than most astrologers realize, with the added advantage that its techniques are easy to master once its core principles are properly understood. This workshop demonstrates a systematic approach to horary judgment, illustrated by a variety of recent case histories. It will show horary technique to be a necessary tool for every modern astrologer, simple enough to be of immediate practical value, yet powerful enough to change the lives of people who are trapped in cycles of despair. 5-6th July 2014 Sixth International Congress of Astrology in Perugia
Perugia, Italy
Organised by Jayavidya Association and the C.I.D.A. Delegation of Perugia

Metamorphosis and Light: Understanding combustion in theory and practice
It is our earth-bound perspective that defines all the planetary and celestial cycles of astrology. One of the most currently underestimated of these is the synodic cycle, by which planets separate from, and then move back to, union with the Sun. This determines the quality of all planetary phases, highlighting times of crisis during the eclipsing period of 'combustion', when planets lose their light and return to the 'heart' of the Sun.
This presentation explores the philosophical and practical implications of combustion, looking at what medieval philosophers taught about the distribution of 'celestial light' between Sun and Earth. It presents combustion as a principle of great relevance to all branches and perspectives of modern-day astrology, arguing that the common view of it being "the greatest misfortune" needs re-evaluation, with recognition that the Sun is essentially creative, and has no association with the principles of destruction.

Missing. Dead or Alive? (2½ hr masterclass)
Astrological investigations of missing persons (and animals) can be baffling without a clear understanding of techniques that show whether the person is lost, has run away, been led astray, or absconded. Event charts are just as illuminating as horaries, and this workshop will show which techniques are best combined to produce reliable judgements of distance, direction and prospects of recovery.

Prophecy, Predictions and Transgressions of Limits: (1 hr presentation)
Throughout history, horary astrologers have walked a theological tightrope for fear of prosecution – never more so than when touching upon the power-filled topics of politics or money. This presentation explores cautionary tales of historical practitioners, whose concerns impacted the development of astrological practice and remain sensitive issues for modern consultants.
