Hi there y'all

I am in need of tables of oblique ascension degree by degree for northern latitudes for primary directions. I have used those kindly posted on the "terra i cielo" website, in 5 degree increments, to make a pretty groovy graph from which i can interpolate good approximations for OA values, but my inner anal retentive demands more accuracy. However it is not so demanding that I feel drawn to calculate the data arithmetically by hand.

I use the Janus software, but I do like sitting out in the wilds to do astrology and hate being slumped in front of a computer for too long.

Does anyone have these tables and would be willing to share them? Conversely, I would be glad to share my A3 graphs if there is a good way to reproduce them.

Thanks in advance,

al Habashi

I wish someone would produce a book of these tables. You would really need a book to get them for each degree at different latitudes. I donít know anywhere where they are currently available, but if someone else does know, Iíd be interested too.

I calculate oblique ascension by subtracting ascensional difference from right ascension. But it would still be good to have tables

Let me get this straight. You want a table of oblique ascension for different latitudes side by side with the ascendant or LST (local sidereal time), right?

I have already written a simple program to calculate oblique ascensions in my computer (in MS Excel). Just tell me how to attach the file to send to you...

Hi Astrojin,

Thatís very kind. I donít know about al Habashi, but Iím not so interested in something that calculates the oblique ascension for particular charts, just tables of oblique ascension for different latitudes so that it is easier for students to learn how to calculate primary directions for themselves. Al Habashi mentioned the Cielo e Terra website (see link below) which has the tables for latitudes 40, 45, 50 and 55, and these are great Ė but it would be better to have more detailed tables. Traditionally astrologers could buy a detailed set of these tables (though they would round them up to the nearest latitude). I donít think there is anywhere that sells them nowadays because primary directions are much less fashionable.

Letís say someone wanted to follow Lilyís instruction on calculating primary directions Ė he gives tables of oblique ascension for latitude 53N. These are great for me because I live at that latitude, but I canít apply his method of working for other latitudes because I donít have the tables he was able to refer to.

Hi Deb,

Ok. I think I know what you and Habashi require. I have already run the computations for different latitudes. The computed table will have RAs (right ascensions) and OAs (obliques ascensions) for different longitudes (zodiacal degrees and signs) and latitudes (geographical latitudes).

Just tell me the range and increment of latitudes (and also the increment of longitudes) you require.

hi astrojin, hi deb

This is fantastic astrojin! Thank you very much, it will make my testing of Dorothean primaries so much easier!

What I would find most useful are values for OA for each whole degree of longitude from 01 to 360, for each degree of latitude from 30N to 60N. This would leave ony very small calculations for me, and even then only for fine tuning, as I increasingly turn to the algebuthar and its period rulers.

That's an awful lot of calculations though - too much astrojin?

My e-mail is naamanbathing@yahoo.co.uk

Thank you once again for your kindness.

To Habashi,

No problem at all. I have already done the tables beyond the range you require. I'll send them tomorrow when I get to my office.

Hello Habashi,

The emails I sent kept bouncing back. Are you sure the e-mail address you gave is correct?

The page at http://www.worldastrology.net/generator.html looks pretty useful,as you can generate tables of right and oblique ascensions for any year and any geographical latitude. at increments of 10 minutes of arc. I have not checked the accuracy, but the output looks to be roughly what I would expect.

The e-mail still bounces back.

Anyway, the site Achernar gave is as good. You just need to run it for all latitudes that you are interested in!

I checked the calculations... They are identical to the table I produced. So I guess it's OK (unless both of us are wrong!!!)

The site with calculator is down. Does anyone have table of Oblique Ascention for 51 degree? I really need it.

Perhaps this can help?

1)
With Google search for:
"Celestial_philosophy_or_Genethliacal_ast.pdf"
Underscores included.
Otherwise try the following link:
http://books.google.it/books/about/Celestial_philosophy_or_Genethliacal_ast.html?id=9mIUAAAAQAAJ&redir_esc=y
Donwload the PDF book, 1828 edition.
Go to page 452: here there is the table of the oblique ascensions for latitude 51.
Take care: the oblique ascensions depend on the obliquity. The book is quite old, and the table was reckoned with the value of 23į 28' (today is about 23į 26'). So, for the OAs we have a small error, anyway no more than 5'. For this reason the mathematical computation, according to the true obiquity, should be always advisable.

2)
With Google search for:
"Richard Fitzpatrick A modern Almagest"
Donwload the PDF book.
Starting from page 41 the tables of OA, up to the max latitudes.

Both of them have some other merit.

Roberto

Hi all,

Hareton, I sent you one via PM, let me know if you got it.

robhywolf, thanks for the awesome link. Very Happy I believe he also has a quite excellent book of Euclid's Elements on that site as well.

To anyone, I've been toying with the idea of making a book of tables of oblique ascensions. Would anyone be interested in this? What other tables would be appropriate or desired?
