bhava madhya and avasthas

bhava madhya a concept, that i have seen expressed a few different ways in indian astrology... it reminds me a bit of avasthas...

it seems a planet that is near the beginning or end of a sign is considered weak.. on page 191 of the shadbala book i am reading - " before delineating a chart, we must also see how far a planet has progressed into a bhava ( house ).. planets at or near the bhava madhya ( midpoint) will be able to give the full effects of that house.. those near the beginning or the end will give the least effect... planets within 1% of the starting or ending degree of a house do not give any effects.. the results can be felt ( or not felt) during the dasha of that planet.. this point has been further clarified in sarvartha chintamani as follows:

a planet that occupies a junction point ( sandhi ) does not give results, particularly during its dasha even if it is exalted, and possesses all the six types of strengths in shadbala..

Sarvartha Chintamani was written 13 century ad.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarvartha_Chintamani

the avasthas concept.. when i first read it, it reminded me of horary.. in horary, the question is considered suspect if the question is asked with the first few degrees rising at the time of the question... how much overlap has happened is anyone's guess...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avastha_(Hindu_astrology)

but reading the wikipedia page on avasthas, it is different then how i internalized it from reading light on life..

i am trying to be open minded on all the concepts that indian astrology holds, but finding it challenging at the moment... if anyone wants to comment on these concepts, i would be interested..

James, can you please give the author and page number for this quote? It sounds like exactly the same quote from PhalaDeeika that I posted somewhere recently.

James, you gave the quote and authors for the Shad Bala book, but there is no reference for the Sarvartha Chintamani quote. That is the author and page number I'm asking about. Or were the authors of the Shad Bala book quoting from Sarvartha Chintamani? In which case they should have noted the author and page number.

It works best to put quotes in a quote box here on Skyscript, and note the book, author and page number. I almost always double check references.

therese,

the quote is from the book shadbala... in the book on page 191, they quote from Sarvartha Chintamani - it is in sanskrit and my typewriter can't write in sanskrit!! in the book under the quote in sanskrit is ( S ch. 1, sh, 114), so maybe that is what you are looking for.. either way, i can't help you anymore here!! cheers james

Thank you, James. I think maybe the Shad Bala authors go Sarvartha Chintamani mixed up with Phaladeepika. Can't blame them as even Indians can have trouble with Sanskrit terminilogy. I have the English translation of SC, but have never seen that quote in the text. It is in Phaladeepika, however, on page 173 of the G.S. Kapoor translation (1991). (But SC is two volumes, and I've never read the text all the way through.)
