Hi,

At some point, when you decide to be serious about horary, you will have to own William Lilly's Christian Astrology. There are several good retyped editions around. For a beginner some easier reading is John Frawley's recently published Horary Textbook, Olivia Barclay's Horary Astrology Rediscovered, and Anthony Louis' Horary Astrology Plain and Simple. Of the three I liked Frawley's best, but I'm a bit biased.

After you've played with some charts and decide you need a good reference, get Lee Lehman's Book of Rulerships.

The real key to getting good is not reading more and more books, but trying more and more charts. If you get something wrong, and you will, take that chart out and go over it until you find your errors. Do the same with the books. Study the example charts until you understand them and how the astrologer arrived at his or her conclusions. Don't worry about the sometimes conflicting information from author to author. You'll find your way.

There is a horary beginner's course right here on this site, I think.

Enjoy the journey,

Tom.

I think as a beginner you really can't go past the horary course on this site. It is very comprehensive and clear and gives you everything you need to judge a horary chart. It also allows you to test your progress with a small quiz at the end of the section, enabling you to ascertain your strengths and weaknesses.

One thing I have noticed from reading the forum, and from studying myself, is that a major issue for beginners is being able to correctly identify the significators, i.e. what houses to use for each question. It is a crucial issue and one that is fundamental to chart judgement. The beginners course has a good section on this but I would highly recommend reading Deb's book 'The Houses', which is available as a download on this site.
