I thought this might be of interest. There is an interesting article citing several ancient sources on medical concepts with respect to two central "humoral" diseases, gout and dropsy.

There is also mention of the kidney/testicle connection, which in Europe linked a man's desire with the workings of his kidneys (specifically, the reins).

"Although quite possibly our first heart failure specialists, the Incas must have considered also the correlation between syphilis (which was rampant at the time) and dropsy. Besides syphilitic heart disease, membranous glomerulopathy and therefore nephrotic syndrome may have been a leading cause of edema. Although the first case report of syphilis causing nephrotic syndrome was not published until 1965, the insight of pre-Columbian medicine fascinates us further by considering the kidneys as sexual organs similar to the testicles but located on our insides."

Warmest regards,

Pam
