for the first time since the discussion came up, the Isclandic crisis hit my general news sites, with an article about how there are large protests calling for the resignation of the PM in Iceland. that was in the last hour or so for me, on the pacific coast, and its about 2:20 pm here. just for time reference. thought it pertinent to your thread,

In a recent questionair refered to in the Norweigan news, 30% of the population were considering emigrating from Iceland. This poll has been taken as T Pluto approaches the IC of the National Chart of Iceland.

The Norwegian government has decided to give Iceland a long term loan of 500 mill Euro, or 4,25 mrd NOK. (Source: Aftenposten).

Iceland's Prime Minister, Geir Haarde, resigned yesterday January 26th and today the socialdemocratical leader, Ingibjörg Gisladottir, has been asked whether she can form a minority Government that can lead the nation forward to the national election that is due in May.

This is transit Pluto closing in on it's opposition to the MC in the national chart of Iceland. The minority government is thought of as an intermediate solution up intil a new government can be elected. Mercury is retrograde as this process comes to surface.

Andrew,

the Act of Union agreement December 1, 1918 was just 2 days Prior to the Saros 11 North Eclipse. this action one day after. Do you suppose that possibly Iceland identifies more closely with the 1918 origination date than the 1944 one?

something to look into.

Iceland Central Bank holds interest rate at 18%

While the rest of the world is moving towards an interest rate of zero prosent, the Central Bank of Iceland reported yesterday, Thursday, that they are holding their interest rate at 18%.

Tansit Pluto is approaching the opposition of the national MC at 3CN32 but won't quite complete the aspect and will perform a frustration when it turns retrograde at 3CP17 on April 4. This story is not likely to be over with the first.

Could other nations be forced to turn up their interest rates if the financial packages to not turn the economy around and there is a need to defend the currency as the nation plunges down into the financial black hole?

Good observation regarding the eclipse-cycle, Granny! Thumbs up

I think it is terrific, but probably symbolic of the total cataclysm Island that must be experiencing at the moment. The story still smacks of transit Pluto in bicorporeal Capricorn in opposition to the MC. The power was given to the opposition.

Ingibjörg Solrun Gisladottir is born Dec 31. 1954 in Reykjavik. Interesting to note that she is in fact a Capricorn and born on the last day of the year.

From a report today, Oct. 5. 2009:

Iceland gets to borrow £ 130 million from Poland with a 12 year repayment deal and is hoping to borrow a further £ 300 million from Russia. This means that Iceland's financial trouble are far from solved, but it has be quiet on the seismic front so far.

In the news again

REYKJAVIK, Iceland – The Big Mac, long a symbol of globalization, has become the latest victim of this tiny island nation's overexposure to the world financial crisis.

Iceland's three McDonald's restaurants — all in the capital Reykjavik — will close next weekend, as the franchise owner gives in to falling profits caused by the collapse in the Icelandic krona.
"The economic situation has just made it too expensive for us," Magnus Ogmundsson, the managing director of Lyst Hr., McDonald's franchise holder in Iceland, told the Associated Press by telephone on Monday.

Lyst was bound by McDonald's requirement that it import all the goods required for its restaurants — from packaging to meat and cheeses — from Germany.

Costs had doubled over the past year because of the fall in the krona and high import tariffs on imported goods, Ogmundsson said, making it impossible for the company to raise prices further and remain competitive with competitors that use locally sourced produce.

McDonald's out of Iceland. Couldn't even sell a McChip menu? Confused

By the way, yesterday the Prime Ministers of 5 Nordic countries turned down a proposal of a Nordic Union - something equivalent to a Nordic EU. At least it shows people are thinking about something.

Iceland Bankrupt?

"Iceland has come to point the where its future destiny will be decided and Norway is our main alliance," said professor Styrmir Gunnarsson at a talk the Ami Magnusson-institute in Reykjavik recently.

Comparisons are drawn to the middle of the 13th century where the Icelandic people their independence and a foreign power was brought in to take over. The Norwegian king became the king of Iceland in 1263.

In February, and no later than 6 March, there will be a general election in Iceland to decide whether the small people of Iceland shall be held responisble of paying a 3,8 billion Euro compensation to Great Britian and the Netherlands for when the Icelandic bank Icesave went bankrupt. Or Iceland may declare bankruptcy.

If anyone has links to relevent commentaries in other international newspapers, these will be appreciated.

Transits hit hard
The current square between Saturn and Pluto is hitting the national chart of Iceland hard at the moment with Pluto on the cusp of the IC and Saturn making its first station in the 1st house and square the Midheaven/meridian. This transit will reach its height in the 2nd half of February and early March.

The coming months are likely to be very difficult with much disagreement and unhappiness. The government will have problems in surviving he crises. It can be acheived, but not without difficulty. Protests and frustration seem almost inevitable - but Iceland are in a difficult situation, they are backrupt and need to work to find a solution. At the moment, however, Saturn and Pluto are crashing down on the nation that feels very much isolated. It's like a tower tumbling to the ground and nobody wants to help out or try to soften the fall.

Astrology has something to offer here - because it provides a picture/road map of what is going on and how long things will take. That sometimes makes the struggle easier to bear.

In the Summer of 2010, from June to August, transit Jupiter will cross the descendant of the national chart, which shows some partnership, marriage or agreement. There is likely to appear a partner at this point and offer some financial solution and alliance. There may still be some question of Icelandic sovreignity - but maybe the arrangement arrived upon is something thought of as a temporary solution.

I think there might be some turmoil at Saturn retrogrades back into Virgo fram April through to June, but then things move forward again and particularly from the middle of September when Pluto turns direct, the work will begin to sort out the rubble, with progress and a more decisive plan and effort to get things back into order.
