Supposedly the original zodiac was divided into 13 portions, 13 signs, not 12, because it was based on the processions of the moon and therefore on lunar months of 28 days. So for an interesting experiment I wanted to try it out and see the dates it produces. I will base it on the Vedic starting point for Aeries. From there onward I divide the constellations into 13 signs. I also think that it is more helpful that rather than think of one "sign" as only one constellation but as a neighborhood of constellations where one is the most noticeable.

Pisces: March 13 - April 10
Aeries: April 10 - May 8
Taurus: May 8 - June 5
Gemini: June 5 - July 3
Cancer: July 3 - July 31
Leo: July 31 - August 30
Virgo: August 30 - September 27
Libra: September 27 - October 25
Scorpio: October 25 - November 22
Ophiuchus: November 22 - December 20
Sagittarius: December 20 - January 17
Capricorn: January 17 - February 14
Aquarius: February 14 - March 13

Just did it for fun to see what people would think. I am an Ophiuchus!! YAY!!

I'm sorry, which original zodiac would that be?

As for Ophiuchus, you do realise its alpha star is over 30 degrees north of the Ecliptic?

@Konrad, apparently astrologers still had many things to say about the qualities of Ophiuchus, particularly its stars.

Yes, this is a tropical astrology website but it does have articles where it discusses the so-called fixed stars that still move through the tropical zodiac.

That is quite a statement. Can you give a reference to any credit source that that supports that comment, because I am unaware of any ancient civilization using a 13-sign zodiac.

The main proponents suggesting a 13 sign zodiac appear to modern astronomers trying to undermine the traditional zodiac. It seems to be a trojan horse argument to criticise astrology in general. I am disappointed to see astrologers falling into that trap. Either that or its based on a naked commercialism to try to corner a new astrological market with the public.

The first astrologer to do this seems to date way back to....1970!

There is quite a bit of ancient star lore on the constellation of Ophiuchus but not as a zodiac sign. Its no more part of the traditional zodiac than Orion is.

Here is Robert Hand on the issue:

We had a discusssion on the traditional forum on the topic of Ophiuchus a few years ago. It might be of interest here.

Thanks, I generally consider 3 kinds of zodiacs to use right now.

1. Sidereal (with 12 equal divisions)
2. With 13 Signs with astronomically accurate constellations
3. Same as #2 except Ophiuchus and Scorpio are fused as Scorpio.
