Curtis,

I was thinking of upgrading DO in the next couple of weeks, but I can't find the page to do so. Could you post a link for it please?

Hi Curtis

We've been discussing the Baghdad foundation chart in the sidereal forum, and we've found that the best way to get a correspondence with the historical planetary positions is to use the Krishamurti zodiac with an addition of 353 - the difference between the starting point of that zodiac and the zero point aligned to zeta Piscium, as it would have been in the Zj al-Shh tables used by Masha'allah. (Juan Revilla - in the Swiss Ephemeris article - refers to it as the "Greek-Arabic-Hindu ayanamsha").

MY current software allows computation by 10 different sidereal ayanamshas, but not the one used by Masha'allah. Martin Gansten just made the following comment:

Quote:
Curtis's Delphic Oracle has a more extensive list than I've seen elsewhere, including one called 'Sassanian'. I'm not sure if this is the same. There is also one called 'Revati'.

Can you confirm if either of these allow computation of the ayanamsha which has its zero point aligned to zeta Piscium around 560 AD - as the Zj al-Shh would have done?

Thanks
Deb

Hi Deb,

I have not tested most of the sidereal zodiac options (only the Lahiri, Krishnamurti, and Fagan-Allan have I tried with any frequency). However, this is an easy calculation and comes directly from the Swiss Ephemeris. The options are listed from the OOP version of my interface component below (Pascal code):

zmFaganBradley: SidMode(SE_SIDM_FAGAN_BRADLEY, 0, 0);
zmLahiri: SidMode(SE_SIDM_LAHIRI, 0, 0);
zmDeluce: SidMode(SE_SIDM_DELUCE, 0, 0);
zmRaman: SidMode(SE_SIDM_RAMAN, 0, 0);
zmUshashashi: SidMode(SE_SIDM_USHASHASHI, 0, 0);
zmKrishnamurti: SidMode(SE_SIDM_KRISHNAMURTI, 0, 0);
zmDjwhalKhul: SidMode(SE_SIDM_DJWHAL_KHUL, 0, 0);
zmYukteshwar: SidMode(SE_SIDM_YUKTESHWAR, 0, 0);
zmJnBhasin: SidMode(SE_SIDM_JN_BHASIN, 0, 0);
zmBabylonKugler1: SidMode(SE_SIDM_BABYL_KUGLER1, 0, 0);
zmBabylonKugler2: SidMode(SE_SIDM_BABYL_KUGLER2, 0, 0);
zmBabylonKugler3: SidMode(SE_SIDM_BABYL_KUGLER3, 0, 0);
zmBabylonHuber: SidMode(SE_SIDM_BABYL_HUBER, 0, 0);
zmBabylonEtpsc: SidMode(SE_SIDM_BABYL_ETPSC, 0, 0);
zmAldebaran15Tau: SidMode(SE_SIDM_ALDEBARAN_15TAU, 0, 0);
zmHipparchos: SidMode(SE_SIDM_HIPPARCHOS, 0, 0);
zmSassanian: SidMode(SE_SIDM_SASSANIAN, 0, 0);
zmGalcentOsag: SidMode(SE_SIDM_GALCENT_0SAG, 0, 0);
zmJ2000: SidMode(SE_SIDM_J2000 + SE_SIDBIT_ECL_T0, FJulianDateET, 0);
zmJ1900: SidMode(SE_SIDM_J1900 + SE_SIDBIT_ECL_T0, FJulianDateET, 0);
zmB1950: SidMode(SE_SIDM_B1950 + SE_SIDBIT_ECL_T0, FJulianDateET, 0);
zmSuryasiddhanta: SidMode(SE_SIDM_SURYASIDDHANTA, 0, 0);
zmSuryasiddhantaMSun: SidMode(SE_SIDM_SURYASIDDHANTA_MSUN, 0, 0);
zmAryabhata: SidMode(SE_SIDM_ARYABHATA, 0, 0);
zmAryabhataMSun: SidMode(SE_SIDM_ARYABHATA_MSUN, 0, 0);
zmRevati: SidMode(SE_SIDM_SS_REVATI, 0, 0);
zmCitra: SidMode(SE_SIDM_SS_CITRA, 0, 0);
zmUser: SidMode(SE_SIDM_USER, FEpochJD, FAyanamsa);

Perhaps the better question is whether the selection does the calculation correctly so if you have a date and an example of what certain planet positions should be?... However, any zodiac is possible in Delphic Oracle or Timaeus because I also include a user defined zodiac (zmUser).

The question in my mind lately is whether System A, System B could be interpreted to be "tropical" and I've been thinking of including those options (adding an offset to tropical positions). And with Lunar mansions which are also in those programs, it seems "phony" to have a tropical variation of these which historically have been sidereal. Currently the only way to fix this is to use sidereal through out. So I'm also thinking of mixing zodiacs in the display for such things as decans, lunar mansions, and navamsa's sidereally while showing Ptolemaic zodiac tropically.

Hi Curtis

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Sorry I didn't respond yesterday - I wasn't able to get online. By the time I read your post I'd figured out (after much hair-pulling) how to set up a custom zodiac in my software. It is definitely a boon that your software includes it.

The reason I'm interested in the Revati ayanamsha is that, from what I've learned from Therese in the sidereal forum, it gives the best reproduction of the charts published in Pingree and Kennedy's Astrological History of Masha'allah. There are a lot of chart details given in that book, many are calculated by the authors according to the tropical zodiac (obviously with computational errors), and some are just described in the text. Since most are ingress charts it should be possible to create them in modern chart form if we use a zodiac that mimics the principles of the Zij al-Shabirjar tables used by Masha'allah. Therese suggested adding 353 to the positions given by the Krishnamurti ayansha, which is what I did with good results.

Although my initial enquiry is now answered, if you do want to check if yours does better, compare the historical details given in the first chart on this link, (based on historical reports of the foundation of Baghdad) with the computer generated figures of the second chart (the closest computer match I have been able to create that comes close to those original figures).

With regard to your suggestion of mixing zodiacs in the display of decans, lunar mansions etc; I don't know how much work this would create for you but I think it would be a great thing for researchers if you were able to do that. I'm sure that historically there was some mix and overlap, as you suggest.

Thanks again for your speedy response to my request for information!

And because I don't want to detract from the important message of this thread:

There are 24 hours left to get this software at half price!
