Stimulating exchange here between R Hand and C Brennan

http://theastrologypodcast.com/2013/12/09/robert-hand-reconciling-modern-traditional-astrology/

(You can skip minutes 30-40 if you are not a fan of Psychological Astology).

Shame the almost meaningless terms Traditional and Modern Astrology were used in the title, and during the programme. Might have been a good opportunity missed to explore and explain why these labels are counter productive. Although, perhaps ironically, the conversation touched on this at times.

R Hand is a treasure!

thanks nixx,

hopefully some others will listen to it. i thought i posted it here when it came out, but i can't seem to find it. i really enjoyed this interview and commented on it back in december when it was done. i like how he envisions an astrology that is more inclusive of different ways of doing astrology.

just saw it in the general astrology section from last december..

Apologies James, I did not notice that post. Not much traffic there, his vision won’t be one everyone at Skyscript, past and present, embraces.

I would say he’s saying (a brief summary, and he’s said this before more or less):
a/ Employ language and thinking relevant to todays culture and cognition.
B/ Adopt Psychological - Neo Platonic conceptions and goals (re his thoughts on fate(s), transits, ‘’self-realisation’’).
C/ Medieval horoscopy, if modified to meet A/ is the optimal means to achieve B/.

I would be interested to see someone with an analytic training using Medieval or perhaps even Hellenistic horoscopy, as far as I know no one to date does this or is attempting to.

I don't see much of this ''inclusive'', many Astrologers and their followers, are perhaps not even aware of this thinking. Folks like Frawley, Green, Tyl, Warnock.. .....who seem to be operating outside of or antagonistic to the A/ and or B/, spring to mind. Plus the Vedic’s, Naturalists, Magi and so on.

I also listened to this chat last night, http://theastrologypodcast.com/2013/08/08/the-future-of-astrology/#comments.

Interesting how a couple of folks who have been observing the astrology wars, from the USA, for a much briefer period of time , perceive unfolding developments. They might not be aware of what Jung thought about turn of the 20th century Theosophy, or what Psychological Astrologers might about this bizarre and disturbing soul levels EA crowd. Nevertheless worth checking out if you haven’t already,

hi nixx - no apology needed. it is easy to miss posts on this site!

i think what makes robert hand unusual is his ability to embrace different directions astrology is going in and perhaps being more able to popularize them too.

i did listen to that other podcast a few months ago as well, but didn't really get a lot from it. i suppose the point to take away from all of this is how we all come from different backgrounds. this might result in a certain ability or lack of ability to have a broader perspective on all of what is going on today, astrologically speaking.. thanks for sharing.

To qualify this Hand said if new ideas struck him as intelligent and coherent he might be persuaded to modify his schema Any new ideas he bumps into would probably need to be capable of being semantically integrated into what he perceives as the central tenets of Western Astrology.

Broad not always a positive though. In this other podcast they touched on Internet providers filtering /blocking Western Esoterica as some do or plan to do with pornography. I'm broadly supportive of this as so much internet astrology is low quality. Like pornography, misuse can have disastrous results.
