Vedic/Jyotish Software: Kala or Shri Jyoti Star

1
Hi,

Can any one tell me the difference between Kala and Shri Jyoti Star software? Shri Jyoti Star seems to be quite well received, but I have enjoyed learning through Ernst Wilhelm's work, and his Kala seems well liked as well.

What are the key features that are missing from either? What are the strengths and weaknesses of both programs? Is there anything too unique or idiosyncratic about either of them that couldnt be easily customized?

I am leaning toward Kala, in part because it is a decent amount less expensive, but also because Ernst W. and Ryan K. have so many Youtube video using it, that I feel I could learn it more easily--and that is important for me.

But I also think that Shri Jyoti Star may have more features or power or capability--and I think I should know what I would be missing from that if I went with Kala.

Any help or thoughts on this would be appreciated, thanks!!

Hank Friedman reviews these programs, and would even welcome an email from you with specific questions. Here are some links, but they may not be the latest on his web site:

"Shri Jyoti Star is the most powerful Vedic astrology program in existence. It has two incredible page designers (for the screen and for printing), more tables of information than any other program, phenomenal research features, and much more."

There is also Parashara's Light which has recently been upgraded to version 9.

I just discovered now that there are a number of YouTube videos covering various aspects of Shri Jyotish Star.

Kala is Ernst Wilhelm's program, and Ernst is a "tropical Vedic" astrologer. I would guess that Kala has ayanamsa options, however. I personally like Parashara's Light as Shri Jyotish Star seems almost too all-inclusive. PL is very complete, however, and extremely easy to use with excellent printouts. I've used it since the days of DOS.

Shri Jyotish Star is a newer program, and has been chosen by a number of professionals in the field. It has the best "marketing," as it's really out there in many videos and reviews.

Hello,

I have used Kala, Parashara light and Shri Jyoti Star. Personally, I feel the owner of Parashara light get paranoïac when you request a password because you had to reinstall your system. Ernst Wilhelm and Andrew Foss, respectivelly owner and developper of Kala and Shri Jyoti Star are far more open minded.

Over the time, I finally settled for Andrew's software, because it offer more options than Kala and I find it quite easy to use (even though I haven't checked the videos).

However, you will have to choose between two versions, one standard, the PRO, with few options for Jaimini (chara karaka and arudha are included, but you will have to check for other options, since I don't use Jaimini by now) and the other, for JAIMINI, which have all standards and Jaimini options, according to Sanjay Rath's teachings.

Only one "flaw", if I can say, which has to do with ayanamsa. If you use Chitrapaksha, it use Spica always at 180° which is fine. If you use another ayanamsa, you may need to set it (although the software comes with some already available): reference year, value of that ayanamsa and fixed precession rate (same method used by B.V. Raman, for instance). Since precession rate change of time, this can be a problem.

A demo is availble on Andrew's website, so it will give you a good idea of what it can do. However, it's version 6, not 9, if I read correctly the website.
Regards,
François CARRIÈRE

I have used Shri Jyoti Star for years now and love it. It is flexible in its layout and options. He has worked with some famous astrologers and integrated features that have different calculations used in different schools of thought. He has many Iyer settings, Shri Pati, Jaimini, dashas, KP, and more. He's a nice guy.

I started with Parasara's Light and that guy was unwilling to address issues and even laughed at the troubles I was having with his software.
