Rare grouping Venus, Crescent Moon, Scorpius's Head

This article is an attempt to reconcile the way we look at the Fixed Stars as if I was an astrologer living at the times of Ptolemy.

“Rare Grouping, Venus, Crescent Moon, Scorpius's Head

"In Chicago, October 9, 2021: Look for brilliant Venus, crescent moon, and the head of Scorpius in the southwest about 45 minutes after sunset. About every eight years, Venus and the moon appear near the head of the Scorpion after sunset. Look for them about 45 minutes after sunset. This is a rare grouping of brilliant Venus, the crescent moon, and the three bright stars that mark the head of the Scorpion. This grouping fits within a binocular field and it will not be visible like this again for another eight years, October 10, 2029."

"The three stars of the Scorpion’s head – Graffias (β Sco on the chart), Dschubba (δ Sco) and Pi Scorpii (π Sco) – span about 6.5°. That nearly fills a binocular field. Getting Venus and the moon into the same field of view as the three stars is infrequent. Including the moon is more of a long-shot."

"Nearly every eight years, a few days, Venus passes between Earth and sun on the same date. In the sky, Venus passes in front of the same stars in the same places as eight years prior. Last time was in September 2015."

How the Ancients describe these stars and Scorpio constellation?

Grafias and Dschubba
Ptolemy makes the following observations: "The bright stars in the front of the body of Scorpio have an effect similar to that produced by the influence of Mars, and partly to that produced by Saturn: the three in the body itself . . . are similar to Mars and moderately to Jupiter... those in the joints of the tail are like Saturn and partly like Venus: those in the sting, like Mercury and Mars." By the Kabalists Scorpio is associated with the Hebrew letter Oin and the 16th Tarot Trump "The Lightning-Struck Tower." [Robson, p.60-61.]

"By virtue of his tail armed with its powerful sting, wherewith, when conducting the Sun’s chariot through his sign, he cleaves the soil and sows seed in the furrow, the Scorpion creates natures ardent for war and active service, and a spirit which rejoices in plenteous bloodshed and in carnage more than in plunder. Why, these men spend even peace under arms; they fill the glades and scour the woods; they wage fierce warfare now against man, now against beast, and now they sell their persons to provide the spectacle of death and to perish in the arena, when, warfare in abeyance, they each find themselves foes to attack. There are those, too, who enjoy mock-fights and jousts in arms (such is their love of fighting) and devote their leisure to the study of war and every pursuit which arises from the art of war." [Manilius, Astronomica, 1st century AD, p.239-240]

Dschubba
With Moon transiting here: build, sow, plant, navigate but do not marry. [Robson, p.73.]

Back in 2015

Last time a similar configuration happened was in 2015, more than 1 million people, mostly from Syria but also Eritrea, Sudan and other countries wracked by conflict and economic turmoil, found their way to Europe in search of asylum, where they struggled to rebuild their lives, often in the face of xenophobia and exclusion.
Keep in mind that the Moon (Fall) and Venus (Detriment) may not feel comfortable under a Mars/Saturn rulership of this Constellation.

World view

While Venus and the moon are visible, the three stars are dimmer in the bright twilight and possibly not visible. Locations farther south such as Johannesburg, South Africa, Santiago, Chile, and Honolulu, Hawaii see the five objects in the same field of view when the moon is somewhat higher in the sky. For Sydney, Australia, the moon is not in the field of view with the other objects. From Key West, Florida, and San Diego, California, the moon is near the horizon as night falls.
Blessings!
